Sadie is a four-year-old Polish Lowland Sheepdog who became diabetic about a year ago. A possible complication of diabetes is the onset of cataracts; and, unfortunately, Sadie developed bilateral cataracts not even a year after her diabetic diagnosis. They were rapid onset, and she went from being able to see to having maybe only 20-30% vision in a matter of days.  Needless to say, we were heartbroken and very concerned. We thought we owed it to Sadie to be checked out by a veterinary ophthalmologist and were recommended to Metropolitan Veterinary Associates by our own vet. Although MVA is two hours from our home, we made the trek and are so very glad we did. After a thorough examination by Dr. Chloe Spertus, it was determined that Sadie was a good candidate for cataract surgery, so we scheduled it for May 19, 2025. I cannot say enough great things about the whole experience. Dr. Spertus and the whole staff at MVA were wonderful in every respect. It was evident from our first encounter with MVA that they were competent and very pet and family oriented. They treated my wife and me and our dog with the utmost respect; and we were very impressed with how caring and compassionate they were toward our beloved pet. We dropped Sadie off on the morning of May 19th with confidence that we were putting her in the hands of the most competent staff we had ever encountered. The surgery lasted about two hours. As soon as Sadie was in recovery and waking up, Dr. Spertus called to tell us that all went beautifully and that Sadie was showing good signs of being able to see. She called again the next morning to report that Sadie had a good night and to give us instructions for her care until our follow-up visit in a week. When we picked her up, we met with a discharge nurse who reiterated the discharge instructions and clearly explained the next steps, what to watch for, and how to care for Sadie until she was healed. This personal approach has really meant a lot to my wife and myself. At no time have we been treated like just another patient; but throughout, it has been clear that MVA was personally interested in our pet, our family, and our finances and committed to providing the best care possible.

Additionally, throughout the experience, there were no surprises regarding costs, which is an important aspect of specialty veterinary care. We selected MVA for a lot of reasons, but two of the most important were their understanding that specialty veterinary care can put a sizable burden on a family’s income, and their commitment to keeping the costs as reasonable as possible. We were given an estimate prior to agreeing to the procedure, and our final bill actually came in a few dollars less than the estimate.

My wife and I give Metropolitan Veterinary Associates our highest recommendation. We are forever grateful to Dr. Spertus and the hospital staff for what they have done for our family.
