Metropolitan Veterinary Associates is currently seeking an Assistant Nurse Manager to join our Management Team. We are seeking an individual that is team oriented and has excellent communication skills with fellow team members, clients and the referral community. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment and is dedicated to practicing the highest quality of veterinary care. The recruited candidate will be responsible for providing strong clinical and administrative support to the Emergency and Specialty Nurse Managers. The individual is responsible for ensuring clients, patients and referral partners receive quality care. The position provides an opportunity to work with board certified specialists and the ability to learn about cutting-edge medicine.

Although additional duties and related tasks may be assigned, the essential duties and responsibilities of this position include the following:

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in supervision of veterinary nursing staff and ensure organizational policies and procedures are followed.
  • Schedule nursing staff using scheduling software providing adequate and appropriate coverage.
  • Assist in problem solving conflict resolutions with Nurse Managers; coaching counseling’s, disciplinary action, and performance-improvement plans.
  • Provide support to Nurse Managers and Education and Development Coordinator by assisting in implementing training, employing new policies and procedures, and ensuring all standards of veterinary nursing care are upheld.
  • Assist Nurse Managers the full cycle of timely performance reviews for new hires; 90-day probationary period and annual reviews.
  • Maintaining a current and well-rounded knowledge of all medication administration routes, equipment use, patient monitoring, medical care, pharmacology, medical terminology and medical restraint, as well as laboratory, radiology and surgical pre-and post-op procedures.
  • Works on the floor to shadow and evaluate the training of current and new team members, recommends processes of improvements with Nurse Managers, monitors new processes into placement.
  • Participates in management team meetings and training.
  • The Emergency Service operates 24 hours per day, 365 days a year and, thus, requires the Assistant Manager to work and/or be available for extended hours including evening, weekends and holidays. This includes the care of post-operative animals if technician support is not available or not adequate for the level of care required.

Qualifications, Experience and Characteristics:

  • Minimum five years working in a clinical setting, specialty practice experience highly preferred.
  • Previous supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Veterinary technician licensure is preferred.
  • Experience utilizing team building techniques and/or coaching skills.
  • Commitment to personal professional development and staying abreast of new nursing techniques and skills.
  • Ability to communicate (written and verbal) and negotiate effectively in a demanding and complex environment.
  • Maintain strong relationship with Medical Director, Hospital Administrator, Nurse Managers, partners, and veterinarians as well as other members of the supervisory team, veterinary nurses, client services team, clients, students, and referring veterinary practices.
  • Understanding of OSHA and AAHA guidelines for veterinary hospitals.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to form cooperative working relationships.
  • Strong organizational leadership with the ability to coordinate the interests of nurses and doctors toward the larger objective.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • All candidates must complete an acceptable background check, including references and a pre-employment drug test.
